Patients are often unaware of the connection between nutrition and mental illness, even though nutrition is a major factor in the severity and duration of many disorders. It is also an area of concern given the increase in obesity and the rise in sedentary living. Specifically, it has been estimated that approximately 155 million adults are overweight or obese.
Given these factors, nutrition is an important area of focus in treatment. The doctors will conduct a thorough evaluation of your diet history, food preferences, lifestyle, and weight, along with your current emotional and physical health. Laboratory tests also may be required at that time to provide information regarding any nutritional deficits or medical illnesses. From there, a diet will be tailored for your individual needs and if necessary, medications will be prescribed. We also offer the Optifast program, which is a medical weight-loss program.
